Pocket Penetrometer Kit Overview
The Pocket Penetrometer Kit is designed for the rapid determination of soil consistency, shear strength, and approximate Unconfined Compression Strength. It is constructed from anodized aluminum and is suitable for field and laboratory use.
Key Features and Operation
- Easy-to-read scale indicating strength from 0 to 4.5 tons per sq ft
- Reduces human error in classification of cohesive soils
- Can be used with the torsional vane shear tester for estimating the degree of internal friction of soil
To operate, slide the ring down against the instrument handle, grip the knurled portion, and insert into the soil to the groove. Read the unconfined compression strength directly from the scale.

Notes for Accurate Measurement
- Select test spots with a smooth surface
- Hold the Pocket Penetrometer at right angles to the surface
- Take multiple readings and average them to minimize errors
- For very soft soils using the Adapter Foot, divide the reading by 16
